“But nothing is as it was supposed to be. The world feels turned upside down. I meant to kidnap the Witch Collector, not kiss him. And I meant to kill the Frost King, not save him. And yet, here we are.”

Wow, just wow. Thank you, Charissa! I literally loved everything about this book. Maybe have a little *HMMMMMM* about the first 1/3rd, but SHE DONE DID REDEEM HERSELF. I’m personally invested in all the characters, and I need more. Now.

Blurb/Synopsis

Every harvest moon, the Witch Collector rides into our valley and leads one of us to the home of the immortal Frost King, to remain forever.

Today is that day—Collecting Day.

But he will not come for me. I, Raina Bloodgood, have lived in this village for twenty-four years, and for all that time he has passed me by.

His mistake.

Raina Bloodgood has one desire: kill the Frost King and the Witch Collector who stole her sister. On Collecting Day, she means to exact murderous revenge, but a more sinister threat sets fire to her world. Rising from the ashes is the Collector, Alexus Thibault, the man she vowed to slay and the only person who can help save her sister.

Thrust into an age-old story of ice, fire, and ancient gods, Raina must abandon vengeance and aid the Witch Collector or let their empire—and her sister—fall into enemy hands. But the lines between good and evil blur, and Raina has more to lose than she imagined. What is she to do when the Witch Collector is no longer the villain who stole her sister, but the hero who’s stealing her heart?

What I Enjoyed

Love/Hate Dual POV in the beginning of the book: Right off the bat, you knew Alexus didn’t have any hatred towards Raina- you knew he thought she was gorg, you knew he was only doing this to protect and save the kingdom. Like, his view point shows him in a gentle and caring light, while RAINA’s pov- you see her brewing with hatred and all the revenge in the world. And at one point I was like, whoooooaa this feels like pinballs in my head- I kinda really enjoyed being thrown around in both POV’s because we learn so much about both characters.

Mute FMC, Raina: This was a refreshing take on a stabby, strong, and motivated female main character. It was interesting to see her communicate with those who did not know her sign language, and those who did. I think she held herself pretty well over all- I’m curious to see how this develops in the coming books.

The Full Circle Feel of Rhonin & Mena: The way that Rhonin came into the story, what he does to protect, and to ensure safety- so impressive. I see him as a more subtle and caring version of Sorren from Nicola Tyche’s Crowns series. (Read the reviews of the three books here: North Queen, Shadow Queen, War Queen). And the full circle-ness of Mena + Rhonin? UGH MY HEART STRINGS.

The Adventure: I’m a sucker for a good adventure, and the fact that they had to travel through the construct to get to their end point? I love me some good trial, tribune, war, murder, blood… you get it. I stuck around to see what Charissa and the Witch Walkers would throw at Raina and Alexus next!

Helena: Just that – one word, Helena. She’s a bad ass. And I’M SO HERE FOR IT. *spoiler? maybe? * I hope her and Rhonin… ya know.

What I Didn’t Like

Alexus & Raina’s Relationship Development: Obviously Alexus was already enchanted with Raina, and I understand why Raina fell as fast as she did, especially with what happened with Finn and Raina’s need for love and acception. But it still felt pretty fast.

Glimpse of Colden: This is just a personal feeling – I want more. Give me more Colden.

Notable Quotes

“Raina Bloodgood,” the prince says. “Did you really think that you could take from me so brazenly and not pay?”

“It’s exhilarating and makes my knees weak, but at the same time, there’s so much affection and care in this man, in the way he kisses and touches, so much promise that the woman who will leave this room will not be the same woman who entered.”

“And I thought your mouth would be my ruin.” Breathing hard, he shuts his eyes for the span of a heartbeat, and then stares into my eyes. “I might not survive this.”

“Every hour here brings some new change that makes my old life less and less recognizable, but I’m beginning to feel like these changes somehow fit.”

“He pulls back and runs his thumb over my lips. “Raina Bloodgood, your mouth will be my ruin.”

“You little rebel.”

“I love the way my name sounds falling from his lips. I want to make him say it a hundred times more. I want him to beg me to kiss him, beg me to take him, beg me to never stop.”

“At least your soul will restore me. I bet it tastes like smoke and starlight.”

Over All Thoughts

Highly recommend The Witch Collector! It was a beautiful breath of fresh air amongst all the more seemingly similar style romantasy novels out today- and it’s a fun story to follow. I’m intrigued, and can’t wait to get started on the next book!
